What is It?!

At first glance I thought it was a Salamander.  I first grabbed the camera and research came later.  According to this website, http://www.wildflorida.com/wildlife/lizards/Broad-headed_Skink.php, it's a Broadheaded Skink.  I had never heard of these, but hubby has seen some with blue tails during his childhood in Pensacola, FL.
He is a handsome little fellow.
I wonder if Sandra, my fellow Floridian blogger, has seen any??

Interesting looking, Marie; I like the coloring of his head!! Of course I would "freak out" if I saw it in my yard :)

Handsome fellow, Marie. I'm betting the lady skinks are swooning.

I've seen skinks, but can't recall if they were red headed?

I have heard of them but never seen a real one. Your pictures are really good. It looks like a child's rubber toy!!

when we lived in St Pete our yard was full of these, but here in Bradenton, I have not seen a single one. In Savannah we had the ones with the blue tails. he is a pretty one...

my kids bring me creatures like this and ask me what they are and I always just say salamander...now I will say Broadhead Skink and they will be so impressed with my knowledge!

Aw, he is just the cutest little thing with those cute little toes. I remember seeing the blue ones when I lived in the south but not this color.

We have both varieties here in NW Florida. The one in your photo is the bigger of the two and they can get a lot bigger! Nice shots!
