A Visit With Peacocks

In the neighborhood my parents live in there are wild Peacocks.  They have been there for many years.  I didn't catch any of the males strutting around today.  But, I will be keeping an eye out for that and a Peahen (female Peacock) with her babies.

The male is called a Peacock and a female is called a Peahen.

The Peacock is the one that struts around with his feathers spread to attract a mate or mates.

The Peacock is about twice the size of a Peahen.

They like to sleep in trees or other high places to protect themselves from predators.

They are omnivores meaning they eat both plants and meats.

I need to catch this guy strutting his stuff! LOL!

Peafowl are fascinating creatures. I think the peahens are quite beautiful. In your third and fourth photos down, the peahen in the back looks very young. She is probably a chick from this summer.

Wait until spring and the handsome peacock will give you a most magnificent display. Our local aviary has peafowls like these, Indian Blues, and also a pair of white ones.

i love that they are free reign! i like their plaintive calls, although i'm sure they can be quite loud if they're close!

you forgot to mention how LOUD they are. my grandfather used to raise them, he owned a restaurant/motel in Callahan FL and they were always wandering around. we have them at our local flea market, the Red Barn, they scream and screech and wander. i wonder if you stomped your foot would he spread the feathers. let me know if that works. that last ones color is so beautiful. they have white ones at Jungle Gardens and i can tell you when HE is strutting his Stuff and stomping his feet to get the ladies attention, he will NOT be happy with the paparazzi. i thought he was going to attack me. but i did get the shot as i ran away

Really wonderful shots Marie! I love the close up of the peahen's face; quite a pretty girl she is!

Gosh these are right there by your mom's house - that is so cool. Each state is so different.

The first time I ever saw one of these was when I was a kid. My family had gone to Texas and we were visiting the Alamo. There were some walking the grounds. They are fabulous birds.
